Expressive Arts TherAPy
The focus, of this person-centered therapy is on the use of art as an expressive mode rather than the aesthetic or craftsmanship of the visual art, the grammar and style of the writing, or the harmonic flow of the song. Different art modalities, such as imagery, writing, dance, music, drama, poetry, movement, dreamwork, and visual arts are used in an integrated way to foster human growth, development, and healing.
In a safe and non-judgmental environment offered by the therapist, the expressive arts are used to express, release and let go of feelings, emotions, perceptions, or personal experiences that could not be expressed in any other ways. The client’s intuitive, imaginative abilities as well as logical, linear thought are brought forth and the whole person is addressed.
Since emotional states are seldom logical, the use of imagery and nonverbal modes allows the client an alternative path for self-exploration and communication. Color, form and symbols are languages that speak from the unconscious and have particular meaning for each individual and clients can gain insight by the symbolic and metaphoric messages that are received, as well as to discover, experience and accept the unknown aspects of self . Clients can realize how their attitudes, feelings and behaviors are affecting them and how to find their true positive potential.
From individuals seeking personal growth, self-discovery and self-expression, individuals struggling with anxiety, low self-esteem, shyness and poor self-image to those experiencing issues such as trauma, life crises, mental health issues, addiction, social and emotional difficulties related to disability and illness, all can benefit from this kind of therapy.
